Literacy enhances dignity and peace: Ban Ki-moon
New York, Sep 8 : Literacy unlocks the capacity of individuals to imagine and create a more fulfilling future, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday.
It opens the way to greater justice, equality and progress and can help societies heal, advance political processes and contribute to the common good, he said in a message on International Literacy Day.
This year’s commemoration of the Day on the theme “Literacy and Peace” offers an important reminder that the critical tasks of preventing violence, calming tensions and ending conflicts demand attention to this fundamental aspect of human dignity, Ban said.
However, despite progress, illiteracy continues to afflict millions of people, especially women and girls, he said.
In 2009, about two-thirds of the world’s estimated 793 million illiterate adults were female. In the same year, some 67 million primary-school-aged children and 72 million adolescents were denied their right to an education.
The costs are enormous. Illiteracy exacerbates cycles of poverty, ill health and deprivation. It weakens communities and undermines democratic processes through marginalization and exclusion, the secretary general said.
He declared that International Literacy Day is an opportunity for the world to reaffirm its commitment to the goal of ensuring that all people can read and write. In the process, the inherent individual dignity will be enhanced and the universal goal of peace will be advanced.

Middle Eastern Universities becoming hot destination for overseas education
When it comes to overseas education, the best bet for any student is the US or UK. Given the infrastructure and the funding options, many opt for that. However, the cost of education and increasing challenges has now made the students to look for other alternatives. In this process, the Asian continent has opened up and places like Singapore, Hong Kong etc are being preferred for location and cost reasons.
Eventually, this has led to the opening up of the European market as well and some of the noted universities in this continent are now wooing the international students. While all this is one side, another sector has slowly begun to emerge in the overseas education front. This is the Middle East. Reports are arriving that significant changes are being made in the Universities across Middle East with an objective of inviting the international students and take their education to a global level.
With an objective to ensure that the locals don’t find the need to go to Harvard or Oxford, new measures are being taken. Now, the universities in the Middle Eastern region are becoming hot. About 34 universities right from Morocco to Turkey to the Gulf are ranking among the top 750 institutions in the world. Also, there are five reputed universities in Israel which are worth it but due to the political disturbances they are left behind.
The best among the lot are the Universities in Saudi Arabia. Institutions such as King Saud University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals are ranked in the top 300 universities. There are also institutions such as Umm-Al Qura University along with King Faisal and King Khalid Universities. As for Morocco, the Al Akhawayn University is gaining a lot of prominence in the international market. Incidentally, this also happens to be one of the world’s youngest universities having been set up in 1993.
The Bilkent University in Turkey is also making its mark. As for Egypt, there are a total of five universities which are vying for top spots. With few more Middle Eastern nations gearing up to make their presence felt, the education market in this region is picking up. Soon, the international students can opt for these places for better education.
Niger Delta youths learn skills from India
Abuja (Nigeria), Sep 9 : India is helping to provide skills to over 200 youths from Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta where there have been years of unrest, said a senior Indian official.
Suresh Makhijani, counsellor at the High Commission in Abuja, said teaching skills to youth from the Niger Delta followed months of negotiations between one of the militant groups, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), and the Nigerian government.
MEND was launched in January 2006 after it claimed responsibility for the capture of four foreign oil workers.
It has since been engaged in attacks on oil pipelines and several oil workers which led to reduced oil output in the Niger Delta.
“We have so far sent three batches of Nigerian youth to institutes in India under the government of Nigeria’s Skills Acquisition Scheme,” Makhijani told IANS.
The first batch of 50 trainees left in July and was sponsored by M/s Sabens Nigeria Limited which is an accredited training partner of the Presidential Amnesty Office.
This group would be in India for six months when they would receive training in underwater welding and commercial diving at Adarsh Institute of Maritime Studies in Chennai.
Makhijani said: “A second batch of 109 which left in early August was made up of non-militant youths recommended by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs of Nigeria and was sent by M/s Intra Log Engineering Ltd Nigeria for three months’ training in oil and gas fields with M/s Creative Technology Ernakulam, Kerala.”
Another group also left in August and this comprised 100 trainees selected by the Nigerian government. It was sponsored by M/s Rovin Energy Nigeria Ltd for six months training in underwater welding, pipeline welding and crane operation at Yak Diving Academy, Navi Mumbai, India.

Mauritius, Bihar schools to sign exchange programme
Patna, Sep 11 A Mauritian school will soon tie up with a school in Bihar for educational exchange programmes, an official said Sunday.
The Mauritian education minister has written a letter to Bihar Human Resource Development Minister P.K. Shahi, proposing the exchange programme, the official said.
In his letter, the minister said that Mauritius will celebrate the 111 birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, on Sep 18 and the African island nation’s government has decided to establish a close link between a school named after him with a school in Bihar.
Ramgoolam, whose ancestors hailed from Bihar, was the first prime minister of Mauritius from 1961 to 1982 after leading his country to independence from Britain.
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam government school of Mauritius and a basic school in Bihar’s West Champaran district will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sep 15 for educational level exchange programme.
“The MOU will be signed between principal of the two school,” the official of Bihar’s human resource development department said.
A life-size statue of Ramgoola was installed in Patna in 2007 to strengthen ties between the Bihar and Mauritus.
A large number of Bihar residents, known as the Girmitiya labourers, had travelled to various parts of the world, including Mauritius, in the 19th century to serve as indentured labourers in sugarcane and rubber plantations.
